Prof. Sumer has been selected to serve on the Board of Trustees of Istanbul Technical University Development Foundation. December 2, 2019.
Professor Sumer served as Opponent #1 for the Ph.D. Project “CFD Modelling of Fluid-Morphology-Soil Interaction for Marine Structures” conducted at the University of Stavanger, Faculty of Science and Technology, by Ms. Yuzhu (Pearl) Li under the supervision of Professor Muk Chen Ong (Principle Supervisor) and Professor Emeritus Ove Tobias Gudmestad and Professor Emeritus Bjørn Helge Hjertager. Professor Sumer attended the defense at University of Stavanger, held on August 22, 2019.
BM SUMER Consultancy & Research is organizing a two-day advanced course on “Liquefaction Around Marine Structures”, to be held in Istanbul on September 26-27, 2019. Read more.
Two years after the success of the first course back in 2017, this new course introduces you to wave-induced liquefaction in the marine environment and its effects on structures. Although the focus will be on wave-induced liquefaction, a brief introduction to seismic-induced liquefaction will be also included. The physics of wave-induced liquefaction and mathematical modelling will be described. Potential threats to marine structures such as pipelines, sea outfalls, breakwaters, seawalls, pile structures, gravity structures and rock berms will be discussed. Counter-measures will be included in the discussions. Discussions will be supplemented by video movies from the CD-ROM accompanying the book Liquefaction Around Marine Structures by B. Mutlu Sumer.

Advanced short course on “Scour Around Marine Structures” was held at ITU Campus on September 20-21, 2018. The course, jointly organized by BM SUMER Consultancy & Research and the Academy by DHI, has been attended by 8 participants from countries including Denmark, People’s Republic of China, Indonesia, Turkey, the UK, and the USA. The participants came from both academia and the industry. Prof. Sumer gave a keynote speech in the 13th International Congress on Advances in Civil Engineering, that was held in Çeşme on Sept. 12-14, 2018. The title of the speech was “Flow-Structure-Seabed (FSS) Interactions in Coastal and Marine Environment”.
Journal of Marine Science and Engineering (JMSE) is launching a special issue titled “Coastal Geohazard and Offshore Geotechnics“. Özgür Kirca of BM SUMER Consultancy & Research is acting as a guest editor along with Prof. Dong-Sheng Jeng (Griffith University) and Prof. Jisheng Zhang (Hohai University). The deadline for manuscript submissions is 1 April 2019.
The special issue covers research topics such as fluid–soil–structure interactions around marine infrastructure; wave-induced and seismic-induced seabed liquefaction; scour around marine structures; effects of tsunamis on seabed soil; among others. Read more
