Advanced short course on “Scour Around Marine Structures” was held at ITU Campus on September 20-21, 2018. The course, jointly organized by BM SUMER Consultancy & Research and the Academy by DHI, has been attended by 8 participants from countries including Denmark, People’s Republic of China, Indonesia, Turkey, the UK, and the USA. The participants came from both academia and the industry. We are very pleased that the course has been very successful, and this has been reiterated by the course participants; please click here to see some excerpts from the evaluation forms filled by the participants upon the completion of the course.
Journal of Marine Science and Engineering (JMSE) is launching a special issue titled “Coastal Geohazard and Offshore Geotechnics“. Özgür Kirca of BM SUMER Consultancy & Research is acting as a guest editor along with Prof. Dong-Sheng Jeng (Griffith University) and Prof. Jisheng Zhang (Hohai University). The deadline for manuscript submissions is 1 April 2019.
The special issue covers research topics such as fluid–soil–structure interactions around marine infrastructure; wave-induced and seismic-induced seabed liquefaction; scour around marine structures; effects of tsunamis on seabed soil; among others. Read more
BM SUMER Consultancy & Research and The Academy by DHI are jointly organizing an advanced short course on “Scour Around Marine Structures“, to be held in Istanbul on September 20-21, 2018. Course instructors are Professor B. Mutlu Sumer, Dr. Thor Ugelvig Petersen and Dr. V. S. Ozgur Kirca.
Course topics include;
- Basic concepts
- Scour under pipelines: piles/bridge piers, including large piles; pile groups/complex structures; and breakwater and seawalls
- Numerical modelling of scour, using advanced CFD models; recent advances
- Transience in scour due to environmental forcing including long term changes, effect of migrating bed forms and seabed lowering
- Scour protection measures; static and dynamic designs of rock dump
- Dynamic responses of scour protections: (1) cover stones stability, (2) winnowing failure, and (3) Edge scour and falling apron behaviour
- Time-integrated design of scour and scour protections
- Scour assessment in MIKE21
- Various case studies
- Monitoring of scour

Professor Sumer has been awarded by a Certificate of Appreciation by the Board of Governors of the Coasts, Oceans, Ports and Rivers Institute, American Society of Civil Engineering, in Recognition of Dedication and Service as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Waterway, Port, Ocean and Coastal Engineering (2001-2018)
Advanced short course on “Liquefaction Around Marine Structures” was held on September 21-22, 2017. The course, organized by BM SUMER Consultancy & Research, has been attended by 19 participants from countries including Belgium, People’s Republic of China, Germany, Mexico, Norway, the Netherlands, and Turkey. The participants came from both academia and the industry, and from mainly two disciplines, Coastal/Offshore Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering. We are very pleased that the course has been very successful, and this has been reiterated by the course participants;
