Professor Sumer served as Opponent #1 for the Ph.D. Project “CFD Modelling of Fluid-Morphology-Soil Interaction for Marine Structures” conducted at the University of Stavanger, Faculty of Science and Technology, by Ms. Yuzhu (Pearl) Li under the supervision of Professor Muk Chen Ong (Principle Supervisor) and Professor Emeritus Ove Tobias Gudmestad and Professor Emeritus Bjørn Helge Hjertager. Professor Sumer attended the defense at University of Stavanger, held on August 22, 2019.
Advanced short course on “Scour Around Marine Structures” was held at ITU Campus on September 20-21, 2018. The course, jointly organized by BM SUMER Consultancy & Research and the Academy by DHI, has been attended by 8 participants from countries including Denmark, People’s Republic of China, Indonesia, Turkey, the UK, and the USA. The participants came from both academia and the industry. Journal of Marine Science and Engineering (JMSE) is launching a special issue titled “Coastal Geohazard and Offshore Geotechnics“. Özgür Kirca of BM SUMER Consultancy & Research is acting as a guest editor along with Prof. Dong-Sheng Jeng (Griffith University) and Prof. Jisheng Zhang (Hohai University). The deadline for manuscript submissions is 1 April 2019.

BM SUMER Consultancy & Research and The Academy by DHI are jointly organizing an advanced short course on “Scour Around Marine Structures“, to be held in Istanbul on September 20-21, 2018. Course instructors are Professor B. Mutlu Sumer, Dr. Thor Ugelvig Petersen and Dr. V. S. Ozgur Kirca.

- Scour under pipelines: piles/bridge piers, including large piles; pile groups/complex structures; and breakwater and seawalls

The course, organized by BM SUMER Consultancy & Research, has been attended by 19 participants from countries including Belgium, People’s Republic of China, Germany, Mexico, Norway, the Netherlands, and Turkey. The participants came from both academia and the industry, and from mainly two disciplines, Coastal/Offshore Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering.
